For whatever reason the past two days I started using the automatic selector of the gearshifter in the smart car. Otherwise 99% of the 34000 miles I have on the car have been with me selecting the gears with the paddles. (Not sure if this is related to down below but thought it was worth mentioning)
Today the car did not want to go into reverse. I reselected reverse by going through the gears, back to park, nothing. The car would beep when I put it into reverse but it would not engage. Eventually I had to restart the car and finally found reverse.
The past week I have been noticing a high pitch squeek that varys with steering wheel input. From past cars I can usually attibute this to a bad wheel bearing.
Great time to not have a local dealer in my area!
All the best,
Aaron Lephart

New one today. The rear glass requires more effort then usual to lock close. I am not sure if there is a adjustment for the latch spacing but that make need adjusted. In the meantime I greased the strike latch and its a little better.
All the best,

The gear selector problem has happened a couple times in the past week. I called my local Mercedes Dealer who I am good friends with (and who where also a smart center until this year) and told them my problem. The service advisor said without a doubt it was the clutch. He had seen this issue come up before. I said it only happens in reverse and he said it should be going forward to, I just never tried it. It was always a going in reverse situation when it came up. When it happened again today I tried going forward and sure enough nothing but beeping.
So I set off to call local (or as local as I could find) smart centers for a quote on replacing the clutch. The going rate was $800-850. When I called a dealer and they called back with the idea that smart may offer a "goodwill" warranty of the clutch I was quick to listen! Apparently some 08 model year smarts have had clutch issues. It brokedown by VIN#. So I quickly provided that and waited to hear a response.
Well today I got a call from the smart center and he said smart was going to "goodwill" warranty it! This is fantastic! And could'nt come at a better time! I am set to sell my Mercedes SLK and motorcycle for another vehicle and the smart could be my only vehicle for a month or two! I am set to drop it off tomorrow. I will pick it back up the following day.
Thank you smart USA!
All the best,
Aaron Lephart

Good to hear that they are willing to fix a known issue, even with it being out of warranty.
My parents just bought a 1999 Mercedes SLK 230 Kompressor off the next door neighbor. It only had 60k on it when they bought it last month.

Nice Mods. Want to trade for a 2005 Mazdaspeed Miata?
I would like to get some Tein Flex or Koni's on my Miata one day, but the Bilsteins are sufficient for now. Lucky to still have a job right now.

OK first off. I have to say that smart center Cerritos is a class act. This place is a hole in the wall! It's a little showroom on a street corner. But the level of class they have is larger then most dealerships have.
My smart center service advisor/customer service/sales person was Jadah Lewis. She was informative the whole way and even called me today to follow up on the service.
And although I never met or even talked to him, thanks goes out to smart USA's Jim Parsons who flagged the "Goodwill" warranty authorization through!
Oh yeah I just sent them en e-mail mentioning this thread on the forum. To make sure I was'nt given any out of the ordinary service this was the first time I mentioned this forum.
All the best,
Aaron Lephart
