I waited until the initial fanfare subsided from the arrival of the all electric smart ED at my local (40 miles away) dealership to test drive one. Bother my father and I came away less then impressed. The acceleration was lackluster according to my dad. But me, having owned a electric vehicle for the past 8 months was less disappointed. Thoughts on my short 10 mile drive. The "fuel" gauge display on the dashboard is less accurate then the external pod gauge located above the radio. They may be due to the fact that there are less bars of measurement on the display so 99% battery remaining looks the same as 91% battery remaining. Upon the salesman backing it out of the showroom and after the contactors where engaged to electrify the system I noticed an audible fan come on for about 15 seconds. The car hadn't been driven recently so I don't know if this was old data stuck in the cars computer that hadn't been cleared with the ignition cycle. I experienced this with the Brammo motorcycle as the information displayed on the dash is not real-time. Every electric vehicle I drive seems to be just on the brink of a transportation breakthrough. Just as the the Brammo is improved with the arrival of the Enertia Plus and later the Empulse model. The smart ED is being leased initially with retail sales starting in 2012. Until then, I do hope smart brings the diesel smart car over with the start/stop function! Also I saw the blue 2011 lightshine edition smart car when I was at the dealership and I fell in love with that color! All the best, Aaron Lephart

Congradualtions on trying out the electric smart. With gas prices continueing their current trend, this might be a car that appreciates in value for the next few years. The only issue may be that the electric power grid may have increased periods of rolling blackouts if we all start driving electric vehicles. When I had my Honda Civic, the gas prices went up with a drastic jump and I was able to trade the car in 20 months after I purchased it for $16,900. I paid $19,600 for it initially and put 37,000 miles on it in that time. On a side note, We just got a Whole Foods Market in my town and it has two spaces for electric vehicles with the free electric charging stations at the front of the store.

We have a couple "Whole foods" around here that offer electric vehicle charging as well. I like seeing that! I remain convinced that some sort of super capacitor will replace conventional batteries in electric vehicles. So many advancments are right around the corner. Of course we have all heard this before. All the best, Aaron Lephart
