European gas-powered versions of Smart Fortwo will boast fuel economy of as much as 56 miles per gallon when the next generation of the two-seat microcar is unveiled this fall, as parent Daimler AG looks to boost demand at home for a model whose sales have stalled in the U.S. this year.

Smart's 45-kilowatt (60 horsepower) and 52-kilowatt (70 horsepower) Fortwos will use just 4.2 liters of gas per 100 kilometers, or about 56 miles per gallon for the European cycle, which is about 20 percent more generous than U.S. EPA ratings. The 62-kilowatt (83 horsepower) version of the Smart will get about 48 miles per gallon for the European cycle, Daimler says.

The new Smarts will also have a broader palette of colors, better communications options and an updated cockpit design.

The improvements Daimler is touting for its European Smarts are likely to make it here because Smart USA needs some freshening to reverse sluggish stateside sales.

Through the first six months of the year, Smart USA sold 3,349 Fortwos, or about 560 a month, which was down 61 percent from a year earlier, Daimler said last month. That pace is down 70 percent from the monthly average of 1,916 cars that dealers sold from the Smart Fortwo's U.S. introduction in March 2008 through August of 2009.

The current Smart Fortwo's base version, which is priced at $11,990, gets an EPA-rated 33 miles per gallon in the city and 41 mpg on the highway.

The model's battery-electric version, which will be leased in the U.S. primarily to corporate customers, will debut in 2012 for the 2013 model year.
