The much anticipated meeting between Fiat North America and potential US Fiat dealers occurred Monday, August 30th. Details are emerging from the meeting, which left many dealers positively excited about the opportunity.

Potential Fiat dealers will be expected to start with small showrooms: 2,500-3,000 square feet, which is enough to display three or four cars. I've reported on this before here, and this confirms that a separate facility will not be required from the start.

This showroom size should be sufficient until the product portfolio expands during the next few year and a new facility will be warranted. Currently, the 500 sedan is scheduled to be sold at the end of this year, followed by the 500C convertible, spring of 2011. Next is the 500 Abarth and 500EV (the 500EV is an all electric version due out in 2012).

Alfa Romeo is also scheduled to arrive in the US in 2012 and it is said that US Fiat dealers could be given first dibs on that franchise (this was discussed but not promised). By 2014, 7 Alfa Romeo models are expected to be sold and, when combined with the 4 or 5 Fiat models (a 4 door Fiat is also slated to arrive by then), will give new Fiat dealers a viable product mix.

As in Europe, the US Fiat 500 will also have a large number of ways it can be customized by it's owner and it is expected that a large percentage of customers will pre-order cars just the way they like.

Fiat expects to initially sell about 50,000 Fiat 500s, that number rising to about 78,000 in 2013 once the other 500 versions make it into showrooms.

And hopefully they will add the Abarth Model to the America's as well.

Look no further than my avatar for an example.

Fiat's new engine for the 500

Autoblog Staff (RSS feed) on Jul 9th 2010 at 4:29PM

Drop a couple of cylinders, add start-stop technology, slap a turbo on, drop it in the Fiat 500 and call it a day. That's exactly what Fiat Powertrain Technologies has done with its newly-introduced two-cylinder TwinAir 85-horsepower engine. The engine has found its first home in the cuddly Cinquicento, but we expect the mill to expand to additional Fiat models soon.
The gasoline-fueled, 0.9-liter two-cylinder motor features a pint-sized turbo, Fiat's revolutionary MultiAir technology and so much more. When dropped in the Fiat 500, the new engine performs better than the company's existing 1.2-liter mill and on par with its 1.4-liter while offering a 30-percent reduction in fuel consumption. When equipped with the new TwinAir, the Fiat 500 can reach a top speed of 108 miles per hour and can hit 60 mph in under 11 seconds. Fuel consumption works out to a handy 57 miles per gallon (U.S.) and emissions drops down to just 95 grams per kilometer of CO2. With max torque sitting at approximately 107 ft.-lbs. at a low 1900 rpm, this little mill figures to offer enough low-end grunt too.

We know that the vast majority of American car buyers will not wax ecstatic over a puny 0.9-liter two-cylinder powerplant, but boy does this little thing show signs of rockin'. Follow the jump for more technical info on Fiat's breakthrough two-cylinder TwinAir engine. Here's hoping this gem finds its way Stateside at some point...

No Abarth and only one engine choice for the US version.  Luckily they are putting the larger more powerful engine in all US models.  I would have liked to see the Twin-air and the 1.3L Multijet Diesel in the lineup as well, but alas, it isn't to be.

I checked the Fiat USA website.  The 'build your own' feature is now available and gives the prices as well.

I know, but I really would rather get the Twinair for the fuel economy.  I commute too far for an electric vehicle to be practical.   The closest i can get to a serious EV is the Nissan Leaf with the 100 mile range, but even they admit that pushing the 100 miles is not recommended.

Except for the black paint and the low profile tires, it will be a good car.  I have bent too many 40 profile rims with the Miata.  Dang city keeps hiding 1.5" steel plates on the road over the hills.

I expected better, but it is respectable.

FuelEconomy.org 30 mpg city, 38 mpg highway with the manual.

All the best,

Yeah, but even the Honda Civic Hybrid went down from 50 hwy to 43 when the gov't revised the testing standards.  I used to get 42.7 from mine, but others were telling me they were getting 44.2 on average.  The only engine they will give us is the largest model engine they put in the car.  I would still like to see the Twin Air technology come over.  That, I think, would increase the fuel economy quite a bit.
